Mets GM pokes fun at team’s bad ownership

February 13th, 2012 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Everyone in New York knows the Yankees ARE New York’s baseball team.  The same can’t be said about the Mets.  Unfortunately for the Mets, they have the worst ownership in all of sports and have been horrible the past few seasons.

This past offseason, they let their star player, shortstop Jose Reyes, walk in Free Agency, and have not added any good pieces to add to the lineup.  In all likelihood, they are doomed for this season and the next few.

Last year, the Mets hired GM Sandy Alderson to turn around the team.  What’s funny about the Mets is that their own GM recently made fun of the team’s poor ownership, led by Fred Wilpon, and knows they aren’t going to do much for a while.

On his twitter account–@MetsGM, Alderson is quite the comedian.  The Mets GM continues to fire tweet after snide tweet at the team that pays him, which makes it a thousand times funnier than satire ever could be.

When looking through his tweets, yes it is wrong to bash your team.  However, if I were the GM for the Mets, I would also want it to make it known that it sucks to work for them.

Between the whole Bernie Madoff-Fred Wilpon controversy, Fred Wilpon owning a New York baseball franchise with a sub-$100 million payroll; David WrightJohan Santana and Jason Bay cannibalizing more than 60 percent of it; fans nauseous already about this season and the future of the Mets; Bernie Madoff sitting in a North Carolina prison for the next 150 years; and with Citi Field ready to sit half-empty, angry fans, the Mets are screwed.

Other than that, everything is fine there.

It’s official: Jeremy Lin is FOR REAL

February 13th, 2012 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

Tebow-mania is officially over.  Now it’s time for Lin-mania.   And yes, I realize I just posted about this, but as a die-hard Knicks fan, I must continue.

Jeremy Lin, the new starting point guard for the New York Knicks, has singlehandedly brought the Knicks back into postseason contention and has saved their season.  The Knicks, who have won five straight since Lin became their starting point guard, have defeated quality opponents such as the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Lakers.

That’s right, the Knicks actually beat the Lakers, who previously defeated the Knicks nine straight times.  However, on this night, in front of a sold out crowd in Madison Square Garden, Lin proved he was for real by scoring 38 points and overshadowing Kobe Bryant.

Kobe had this to say about the undrafted Harvard grad:

“He has been phenomenal.  Players don’t usually come out of nowhere. If you can go back and take a look, his skill level was probably there from the beginning, but no one ever noticed.  It is a great story. It is a testament to perseverance and hard work. It is a good example to kids everywhere.”

Call it “Lin-sational,” or what most people are calling it, “Lin-sanity.”

Either way, it’s been great being a Knicks fan as of late, as the success should continue.  Lin has added chemistry and brought back the pulse of the Knicks.

There’s passion, there’s energy, and there’s dominance.  This is how you should play New York Knicks basketball.

Starting point guard for the New York Knicks is….Jeremy Lin?

February 6th, 2012 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

The NBA season has been unpleasant and disappointing thus far for us Knicks fans.  Yes, it’s still early and yes, the Knicks do play in the weak Eastern Conference.  However, with a front court that includes superstars Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudamire, and newly-signed Tyson Chandler, a 9-15 record is not what we expected at all.

It’s been a tough road for the past few years as a Knicks fan.  As a kid growing up, the Knicks had one of the most dominant teams in the league led by Patrick Ewing, which is how I got into basketball and became a Knicks fan.  Ever since 2002, the Knicks have been lousy and extremely frustrating to watch (see Isiah Thomas era).

Last season, for the first time since 2003, the Knicks finished with a winning record and a spot in the playoffs (HALLELUJAH)!!!!  This season the Knicks were supposed to become a force in the East, and become a dominant team…which hasn’t.  So instead, us Knicks fans have to continue to wait…and wait…and wait.

A spark was needed for the season, and it just might have happened.  In comes Jeremy Lin, the undrafted rookie last year out of Harvard University.

In the last game against the New Jersey Nets, Lin came off the bench to score 25 points and register 7 assists.  By the end of the game, the Madison Square Garden crowd was chanting his first name (that’s enough chills for a lifetime, there), the PA was blasting Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy,” and a starting point guard– if not star — was born.  By Monday morning he was dominating the team’s official website.

Who knows, this could be a fluke, but why not continue to give this guy a chance?  It’s a start, as Lin will start Monday night against the Utah Jazz.

Another funny thing to add is that his teammate is Stanford product Landry Fields in the Knicks backcourt. With that, the Knicks will lead the NBA in perimeter-based combined SAT scores.

Once again, it’s early in the season.  With all that star talent on the roster, the Knicks should be able to turn it around soon.

Justin Verlander’s Super Bowl pick is spot on

February 6th, 2012 · No Comments · Uncategorized

For the first time in 20 years, Justin Verlander, arguably the best pitcher in the game of baseball, won both the AL Cy Young Award and MVP Award during the 2011 MLB season.  Not since former Oakland Athletics pitcher Dennis Eckersley in 1992 has anyone come close to this achievement.

Every baseball fan knows he is arguably the most feared pitcher in the game, but apparently he is psychic as well.  Only one question remains with Mr. Verlander: Is there anything you can’t do?

Prior to the big game on Sunday, Verlander tweeted the exact same score and outcome of the game:

21-17 prediction #proudwinner

Humorously enough, Verlander even had his share of comments about the halftime show, most notably on Madonna:

Thought Madonna was tanking… She killed it at the end though.  Can’t miss up the classics.

Yes, 21-17 is a fairly common score in the NFL, but it was still the correct prediction.  It’ll be interesting to see what Verlander predicts for the NBA Finals or Stanley Cup.  If only Verlander were to pick the Yankees to win the World Series this year….
